Functional Designer (System Architect)


The Functional Designer is responsible for understanding current and future business requirements and translating them into functional, conceptual, high and low level technical designs that consistently fit into the existing technical landscape but also supports further developing and delivering the envisioned target architecture in a sustainable manner.

The Functional Designer also supports the Developers (internal and external) and Quality Assurance in explaining the technical designs for various projects and acts as knowledge hub and controller for less experienced colleagues.




∙Closely align with the business analysts to understand the nature of requirements and propose reasonable, business-process oriented architecture solutions

∙Design conceptual and technical designs based on the functional requirements in collaboration with other stakeholders

∙Proactively conduct functional technical design reviews and analyze problems and change requests

∙Work closely with other areas within technology to determine the highest level of system requirements required to meet the business requirements within budget and technology constraints


∙Develop and define a wide-range of documentation, for example architecture outlines, functional specifications, system requirements, technical designs, presentations, etc. as required

∙Maintain architectural documentation on a regular basis and be accountable for the quality and completeness

∙Communicate (and/or train as necessary) on documentation principles & content

Information collection:

∙Investigate both technical and functional business requirements & processes, standards and/or guidelines (including TM Forum, TOGAF, COBIT standards as well as internal sources) to determine their impact on design

∙Evaluate existing business processes and applications when required

Governance and standards:

∙Conducts analysis and develop internal technical policies/standards; follow up and change in cases where necessary

∙Report to management on results

∙Perform peer reviews on functional/technical design to promote & enforce compliance with agreed enterprise architecture principles

Conduct analysis:

∙Conduct ad-hoc & regular analysis on functional business requirements as well as their implementation in the systems, documentation, processes, data models, etc. as required

∙Document findings and develop realistic proposals on how to progress and improve



Relevant experience:

∙5-7 years professional experience within IT, ideally in the telecommunication industry

∙Several years of experience in IT Architecture

∙Experience in software development and principles of structured application development

∙Experience of managing projects/tasks in an changing environment


Education / Certification:

∙University degree in relevant field such as IT, computer science, etc.

∙Professional qualifications preferred

∙Very good English language (verbal and written) is mandatory.


Technical Skills:

∙Ability to understand and interpret functional and process requirements to translate these into reusable and sustainable technical designs in the course of discussions with business stakeholders

∙Comprehensive understanding of IT architecture principles and methodologies and how to pragmatically translate these into IT applications and infrastructures - utilizing standardized design, development and deployment processes

∙Current knowledge of IT-trends (e.g. Cloud Computing, In-Memory Computing, Internet of things) and best practices as well as related enterprise-grade technology

∙Practical IT-skills with Java, Enterprise Service Bus/Web Services (e.g. TIBCO), SQL/database technology, XML/XSD would be highly appreciated

∙Strong analytical skills & interest in understanding the overall context, thinking & collaborating outside the box

∙Well-structured, independent and reliable working style; ability to manage multiple efforts with competing priorities and with strong focus on results

∙Influencing and relationship management skills to moderate and resolve conflicting interests to achieve best possible solutions

∙Team spirit, self-motivation, flexibility and proactive mindset are required
