Feb 15, 2018

Over 1.8k Belarusians took indoor and outdoor runs from 9 to 11 February within the framework of social initiative Winter running game: #velcombegom. velcom converted kms into BYN 27 789 and transferred to Paralympic committee of Belarus in aid to handicapped children.

Winter running games became one of the largest scale running initiatives in Europe throughout winter time. The majority of «kind” runners lives in Minsk. However, oblast and rayon centers added quite a significant number of kms to overall result. Aid to children arrived from overseas too, first of all from the USA, France, Russia, Turkey, Sri Lanka and Egypt.

All runners were figuratively split into two teams: those who ran outdoor jointly covered 11 256 kms, those who ran on treadmills reached the distance of 5 277 kms. velcom multiplied the distance of the winning team by factor two, converted it into rubles and the second best team result was converted into rubles without multiplication. Thus, overall BYN 27 789 was raised in aid to children.

Money certificate was handed over by Nikolay Yushkevich, velcom’s First Deputy General Director to Nikolay Shudeiko, General Secretary of the Paralympic Committee. All the funds raised will be transferred to two Molodechno boarding schools raising kids with vision impairments and scoliosis for reconstruction of the stadium engaging them into sports.

A number of records was set during Winter Running Games. Thus, Victor Nezhelsky from Bobruisk demonstrated the best national result in 12 hours run on treadmill having finished a distance of 124.23 kms. At the same time 70 sportsmen of Federation of Adventure Racing “drew” 5 olympic rings with total length of 50 kms. A 60 year old marathon runner Yaroslav Torgovkin ran 10 kms crossing Lena river at -31C.

Winter Running Games have got an own anthem from J-Mors. In addition, two unusual valenki and treadmill runs drew attention to the initiative.

“The scale of winter runs in aid to children exceeded our expectations. Despite cold weather 1.8k participants all together ran more than 11 thousand kms. It shows that running community in Belarus develops rapidly and more and more non-indifferent people are eager to make a contribution, - supposes Vyacheslav Sminov, head of velcom PR. – It is quite telling that the number of outdoor runners exceeded the indoor participants. Belarusians enjoyed winter runs even in cold weather”.

Winter Running Games took place from 9 to 11 February under the auspices of Paralympic Committee. Besides aid to children, the initiative was designed for promotion of running community. Moreover, it demonstrated advantages of winter runs when we most of all lack physical activities.
