GPRS FAQ

What is GPRS?

GPRS is a General Packet Radio Service in GSM networks. The main peculiarity about GPRS is the information (received/sent) division into small data packets and its further simultaneous transmission via several communication channels. At the same time voice channel is busy only during data transmission and not constant as it is required by other forms of network access.

What is necessary to use GPRS?

It is necessary to ask an operator to activate the GPRS service. This can be done at the Velcom offices upon signing a standard application. Naturally, you need to buy a handset supporting GPRS. And that's it. Whether to buy additional accessories or not depends on devices you will be using with a GPRS–phone. Probably you will not have to buy anything else, and IrDA–port in the handset and notebook will be enough.

Up

Can I use GPRS via Bluetooth?

Sure, you can. If your handset supports both GPRS and Bluetooth you can use it as a peripheral modem with any device having Bluetooth module. For example, if the matter concerns a notebook you should get a Bluetooth PC Card and enjoy the wireless Internet.

Up

What devices can I use to get the Internet access if connecting via GPRS?

Any device, from an old Palm to a desktop. The thing is the device itself needn't support GPRS. To work via GPRS connection you should have a standard modem. If it is a question of PDA then you should have a peripheral modem working via IrDA, because all the work with data is done by the modem, installed into your phone.

Up

Can I use a GPRS–modem on desktop PC?

Yes, you can. To do that you should set up a new modem using a special GPRS–modem driver. Usually, the necessary software is on the disk that goes together with the phone. If there is no such disk you can find the necessary software on the Internet.

Then you should adjust the modem settings and that's it!

Up

What is the data transmission speed via GPRS connection?

Today the GPRS–technology provides the speed which is 4 times higher than the standard GSM–network speed, which can be compared to a good modem connection. The connection speed depends on simultaneous users number, GPRS–supporting handset class, quality of connection and cell capacity. Such technical facilities of Velcom network allow establishing the communication speed up to 50 kBits per second.

Can I talk on my mobile phone when connected to GPRS?

Yes, you can, except for the periods when you directly load data because at this time your telephone is busy with information receiving/transmission. This limit exists due to the modern class of handsets supporting GPRS.

There are three types of GPRS–modems — A, B, C.

Usually, the GPRS–modems belong to the C–class. These modems are not designed for talking, they are used only for data transmission. Mostly these are PC–GPRS cards for notebooks.

B–class is the handsets that can be used both as usual phones and GPRS–modems. Presently, all the phones available belong to the B–class. That is you can transfer/receive data and talk in turn.

A–class is the new generation handsets that allow transferring/receiving data and talk simultaneously.

Up

Can I receive/send SMS when connected to GPRS?

Yes, you can. The situation is similar to the one with calls receiving. As soon as there is a pause in data receiving/transfer you get SMS. At the same time there will be no disconnection, the connection will be interrupted just for a few seconds.

Up

What are the advantages of GPRS in comparison with Dial–up?

The advantage is that when you connected to GPRS you pay only for the information sent/received. With Dial–up connection you pay for the whole connection time.

Up

Can I use GPRS driving in a car, for example?

Yes, you can. Our experience shows it is quite possible.

It should be noted that there may be some troubles when moving between the base stations as you can get into an overloaded cell and, as a result, the GPRS connection denial.

Up

What are the conditions of GPRS service providing?

The priority is voice traffic. Should a cell be overloaded by users, the equipment will automatically limit the GPRS–access. As soon as the users number in one cell decreases the equipment will be automatically re–set to provide the full range of GSM–services.

Up

Can I use WAP via GPRS?

Yes, you can. Practically, all the GPRS–handsets available today give such opportunity. You only have to adjust the proper settings.

Up

What should I do if I have activated the GPRS data transmission service but it does not work?

Call the customer service, number 411

But first of all check all the handset and device settings concerning network access.

Up

Where in Belarus can I use the GPRS service?

Presently, the GPRS coverage is rather equal to the Velcom network coverage.

For how long a phone can work with GPRS with one accumulator recharge?

It depends on the accumulator capacity. It should be noted that during the GPRS connection period energy is not constantly consumed and the intake capacity can be different. It happens because the energy is consumed only at the moment of data receiving/transmission. The amount of the information sent/received is very important.

On average, the GPRS–operation time is the same as the operation time in conversation mode, guaranteed by the handset producer.
