Velcom is the first GSM-operator in the Republic of Belarus providing telecommunication services under the brand names “velcom” and “PRIVET”. The Company started its operations on April 16, 1999. Since November 2007 velcom is a member of Telekom Austria Group (TAG), one of the most successful telecommunication holdings in the Central and Eastern Europe, which currently consists of a fixed net in Austria and eight mobile communication operational companies.

Coverage area

Velcom service is available for citizens of all regional centers, cities and large settlements with a population of more than three thousand people. Velcom network coverage covers more than 94.6% of the country, where resides more than 98.6% of the population (100% of urban residents).

Velcom network works in the main motor vehicle crossing points and railway and air border crossing across the state border of the Republic of Belarus. The Company has provided complete velcom coverage of the main highways of the country, builds network that meets the current requirements: work in 2 ranges as follows 900 MHz and 1800 MHz, support of technology of batch communication GPRS, provision of wireless access to the Internet by means of WAP. Velcom is the first operator of mobile communication of GSM standard in the country that provided its subscribers with an access to high-speed data transmission by means of EDGE technology. In the whole network coverage improved sound quality (EFR) and protection from interference (Frequency Hopping) are used. Velcom high quality communication provides optimal frequency planning. It is provided by the best experts of the country who have been trained in the leading European companies.

We are moving ahead … Investments in quality and technology

velcom is one of the largest taxpayers in Belarus and consequently one of the biggest foreign investors. The company is successfully partnering with the world’s top suppliers of Telco solutions, leaders in their industry – Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson, Samsung, HTC, IBM Lenovo, Huawei, etc. The total amount of investments since 2007 exceeds about 272 million Euro or about 1 million Belarusian rubles.
For over 12 years the company has been actively investing in implementation of the advanced technological solutions as well as into creating a reliable network infrastructure up to Europe-wide quality standards. velcom is the first operator in Belarus to offer the third generation HSPA+ technology throughout 3G coverage area (3G was put into commercial operation in March 2010). End of February 2011 velcom rolled out the second UMTS frequency channel in the cellular network of the operating company and announced about the implementation of the newest Dual-Carrier HSDPA technology in the 3G|3G+ velcom network, to be represented in the Republic of Belarus for the first time ever. In fife month the operator offered the first DC-HSDPA modem in all own shops centers.
Currently 3G|3G+ velcom’s network covers 95.2 % of the territory with 100% of Belarusian urban population. The 3G base stations located in 264 settlements, including in 91 cities. Residents of 2967 Belarusian settlements can use operator services based on the 3G|3G+. For the purpose of providing of high speeds velcom continues to implement of the Dual-Carrier HSDPA innovative technology which is available on 358 base stations.

velcom is a leading provider at the Belorussian market of voice communication services and high-speed Mobile Internet.
The company offers to its customers not just basic tariff plans but packages of services tailored to the needs of different target audiences: machine-to-machine technologies, equipment telematics and tracking, Mobile sales agent and Mobile office, organization of VPN and data security, a big and flexible portfolio of corporate tariff plans and tariff plans and packets for voice and data traffic  etc.

Investments in the future

In 2008 velcom was announced as the top one company with foreign investments in Minsk. In 2009 velcom was the only mobile operator winning the contest “The Best Entrepreneur of Minsk in 2009” in the nomination “services provider”.
Helmut Duhs, Chief Executive Officer of SB Telecom Ltd. in charge of FE “VELCOM” was twice honored in 2009 and 2010,  in “40 under 40” rating, the list of the most successful top-managers in telecommunication industry under 40 years old which is annually published by the “Global Telecoms Business” magazine.
The activity of velcom is traditionally linked with participation in social and charity programs. This is an indispensable component of velcom’s corporate strategy which is reflected in the adopted within the company “Guidelines of corporate social responsibility of velcom towards employees, society and environment”. The initiatives aimed to support the talented youth of the country became the main direction of operator’s social programs in 2010.
